PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — The Seacoast Women’s Giving Circle (SWGC) will hold its annual Learn Forum on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth. The event, “Protecting Marginalized and At-Risk Children and Adolescents,” is free and open to the public.
The Seacoast Women’s Giving Circle is a community-based philanthropic group founded in 2006. The nonprofit organization is committed to improving the quality of life in the region through collective giving and grassroots action. SWGC currently has 125 members who gather multiple times a year to learn about community issues and pool donations for greater impact. Members make a donation of any size to the group’s fund, learn about community challenges, and volunteer with local nonprofits. The group then distributes grants to Seacoast area organizations that address the current year’s focus after a rigorous grant review process.
The upcoming panel discussion on at-risk youth will highlight the challenges facing young people in the Seacoast region and how the community can support them.
Panelists include:
- Gilles Bissonnette, legal director, ACLU of New Hampshire
- Dr. Christine Murphy, development director, NH Outright
- Janine Richards, LCSW, director of program development for Seacoast Youth Services and Seabrook ACERT coordinator
- Lisa Wolford, Esq., executive director, Children’s Law Center of New Hampshire
Barbara MacLeod, former NECN anchor, will moderate the panel discussion.
“The strength of any community is measured by how well it cares for its children,” said Jen Bell, Learn Committee chair. “These speakers represent the front lines of that care and advocacy for vulnerable youth. We hope attendees leave with a deeper understanding of the challenges facing young people and a renewed commitment to take action in support of them.”
The Giving Circle celebrates two decades of impactful philanthropy
To mark the 20th anniversary milestone, the Giving Circle has launched an ambitious fundraising campaign to deepen its impact across the Seacoast. The goal is to raise $250,000 in support of nonprofits serving marginalized and at-risk children and adolescents throughout the region. The campaign includes a $50,000 matching fund that doubles all new and increased donations up to $1,000, made possible by founding members and longtime supporters.
“Every gift, no matter the size, helps strengthen the safety net for Seacoast youth,” said Daphne Schwab, Giving Circle co-chair. “Together we can make the Seacoast a more supportive place for every child by investing in the people and programs that stand beside them.”
Janine Richards of Seacoast Youth Services, a 2012 Giving Circle grant recipient, said the Giving Circle’s focus is well-timed. “Organizations serving young people are facing reduced public funding and increasing needs,” she said. “The Circle’s support provides both visibility and stability when it is most needed.”
Blair Demers, CEO of the Foundation for Seacoast Health and one of the Giving Circle’s community partners, said this year’s focus “gets to the heart of what community health really means.” She noted, “When we invest in young people’s safety and well-being, we’re investing in the Seacoast’s future,” she said. “What makes the Giving Circle’s model so powerful is that it connects learning with giving. It helps the whole community better understand what children are facing and how we can respond together.”
National Movement, Local Impact
Founded in 2006, the Seacoast Women’s Giving Circle was among the early adopters of the collective giving model, a movement that has grown rapidly across the country. More than 4,000 giving circles now operate in the United States, engaging an estimated 370,000 members who have contributed over $3 billion to local causes, according to the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Philanthropy Together.
“Giving circles show that philanthropy works best as a team sport,” said Anne Sudduth, founder of the Seacoast Women’s Giving Circle. “When neighbors pool their gifts and learn together, they not only fund solutions but also strengthen the civic fabric of their community.”
Since its founding, the Circle has directed more than $1.4 million to Seacoast nonprofits. Past grants have supported organizations that address mental health, housing, caregiving, hunger and food insecurity, environment, the arts and more. Members contribute to a shared fund and participate in volunteer projects together across the region.
