Congratulations The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire, in partnership with the Hampton Heritage Commission, unveiled a new marker honoring Dinah Smalls Burdoo, one of the last surviving enslaved people in Hampton.

Esteemed for her great age and wisdom, a note in the Hampton Church record noted that she died suddenly, and “retained her powers of body and mind most perfectly.  Not a professor, but serious, undoubtedly more worthy than many professors.”

A special thank you to the over 60 community members who gathered outside the town library to witness the event, including Mitzi Proust, the first Black woman business owner in Hampton.  This is the Trail’s 16th historic marker installed across the state.
