WMUR TV reports Department of Homeland Security says that there will be no Immigrant detention facility. From Governor Kelly Ayotte:
“During my trip to Washington last week, I had productive discussions with Secretary Kristi Noem, and I’m pleased to announce that the Department of Homeland Security will not move forward with the proposed ICE facility in Merrimack,” Ayotte said. “I thank Secretary Noem for hearing the concerns of the Town of Merrimack and for the continued cooperation between DHS and New Hampshire law enforcement to secure our northern border, keep dangerous criminals off our streets, and ensure our communities are safe.”

Southeastern Massachusetts appears to be the hardest hit in New England after the blizzard of 2026. That includes Cape Cod and the islands off the Bay State. Massachusetts crews are still restoring power. It was out for 290,000 people as of last night. And that they say it could be days before everything is restored after the historic storm. It mirrored the blizzard of 1978, when like this time, the coast was hardest hit. Latest reports from Maine and New Hampshire indicate that less than 1000 were without power there. Still there are dozens of cancellations or delays of schools and other institutions.
To add insult to injury, some detainees were stuck in a plane at Pease international airport because of the snowstorm. 19 hours before they could be deplaned and taken to the airport terminal. The Omni air flight arrived from Texas, just minutes after word was received at the airport. As usual, federal officials have been in tightlipped about the number of detainees on that flight or its future destination. What is known is that the detainees were given catered food and medicines at the terminal.
New Hampshire’s congressional delegation, all Democrats are sponsoring legislation aimed specifically at the town of Merrimack where residents are opposing a planned immigrant detention center there. From New Hampshire, US Senator Jeanne Shaheen about the bombshell in Merrimack
They were never consulted about ICE plans. And they don’t want the chaos of detension facilities in their communities. For her part, Hassan pointed out,
I’ll continue to work to ensure that we have secure borders and an immigration system consistent with American values, and that granite staters, local and New Hampshire first responders have a say in what goes on in their communities.
Common man for Ukraine founders are memorializing a day four years ago today when that country was invaded by neighbor Russia. In a statement, the Plymouth, New Hampshire, humanitarian group said,
Four years ago today, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine ripped apart the normal life of innocent Ukrainians.
While many families fled to safety with little more than what they could carry, others stayed back—enduring near constant bombings and air raid sirens. The country unified in the face of danger, with ordinary citizens turning into soldiers to defend their communities.
This week’s monster snowstorm has had an unusual impact on newspaper deliveries. For the first time, the Boston Globe said it would not print one this day after the storm. The paper is printed in Taunton, and printing Press staffers were not able to get to work, so executives have postponed the print edition until Wednesday, although the digital edition is still available.
President Trump is expected to touch on this fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in his state of the union speech tonight. And in his broadcast address, he’s expected to defend US foreign policy, including the conflict with Iran as well as. Domestic issues like the economy.
